Dust mites are a small group of small and easily overlooked insects. They vary enormously in appearance, from sheer dragonflies with paper-thin wings to millimetre-sized, pale and wingless bookworms.
Some species spend their entire lives in one and the same environment, while others alternate between different habitat types. They feed mainly on microscopic algae, fungi and lichens. Most species live outdoors, often in trees and shrubs where they find food in abundance on leaves, branches and bark. Some species live indoors and can be found in basements, storage rooms, bathrooms or in books. An indoor species that has been known for a long time is Trogium pulsatorium. When it drums with its rear body, a ticking sound is heard against the wall.
