In the small medieval village of Chianni in Tuscany, the olive groves have supported the inhabitants for several hundred years. Every autumn, the soil biologist Håkan Wallander and his friends travel there to pick olives and take care of the beautiful trees.
In the friendly landscape of Tuscany, they can experiment with different cultivation methods in the olive grove. Local experts teach them how the trees should be traditionally pruned and fertilized, but as a soil scientist, Håkan Wallander can also introduce modern knowledge about how biodiversity can be strengthened and the plantations made more climate-smart. Under the olive tree provides a deeper understanding of how the land we live on needs to be taken care of in order to continue to support us in a long-term sustainable way. If the earth is to become a better place to live, more of us must start thinking like gardeners.
"An ecological mindset pervades the book and the learned explanations are interspersed with and woven into fun and thought-provoking personal observations, experiments and acquaintances with other researchers and colorful Italians in the industry." BTJ
