In the world of birds depicts man's interest in birds from ancient times to the present day.
Particular emphasis is placed on the period from about 1800 to the first decades of the 20th century, the rise of modern ornithology. Bo Ekberg tells as eloquently as initiated about how a methodical exploration of the birds took a fixed form, largely with Linnaeus as a point of departure. They observed, collected and investigated, compared and drew conclusions. Different conceptions of the purpose of ornithology competed with each other. It could apply to how the birds were to be grouped and how their life in the wild was to be depicted. The enigmas of reproduction and migration were pressing questions to decide, as was the importance to be attached to Darwin's explanation of natural selection. The building of museums and the creation of egg collections as well as the use of bird feathers in the fashion industry reaped in previous centuries an infinite number of victims in the bird world. As a result of this, demands for protective measures emerged, a need that today is accentuated by the growing environmental and climate threats. Not least the author dwells on how magnificently the birds have been rendered by sharp-eyed artists and illustrators in the long line of bird books. In the world of birds is a richly and beautifully illustrated volume.
