In pre-industrial Sweden, people were often dependent on nature for their livelihood.
Over the course of the centuries, many experiences of and great knowledge about the wild mammals, their behavior and areas of use were gathered. This book describes not only the ecological knowledge of how to best make use of what nature has to offer, but also a series of folk traditions and beliefs that have developed around various animals. While many animals have played an important economic role, others have competed with or even intimidated humans. That is why people have sometimes not dared to mention them by their proper names, but have instead resorted to so-called noaords. There has also been a rich flora of local animal names. In the book, dialectal name forms and taboo words used by the common people about the wild mammals are investigated. The professor of Nordic languages Staffan Fridell and the ethnobiologist Ingvar Svanberg are both active at Uppsala University.
