Birds are perhaps nature's most skilled architects. Their nests are complex little structures, but they are often hidden in trees, hedges and ditches so that they are not seen.
In this book, 58 nests built by some of our most common birds are reproduced. The watercolors show nests in natural size and with a fascinating richness of detail. Each illustration is accompanied by a story about the nest and a description of the construction method and the materials used – twigs, roots, grass, reeds, leaves, moss, hair, feathers, cobwebs and even textiles and strings. There is also a presentation of the bird that built the nest; each bird species has its own building style and design language. All depicted nests have been found blown down or abandoned – the illustrator has been careful not to disturb nesting birds. The foreword is written by the ornithologist Lars Jonsson, who is one of the world's foremost bird painters.
