Blackbird – Sweden's national bird, with 1.8 million pairs distributed across the country.
For a long time it was a shy forest bird, nowadays it is one of our most urbanized and popular birds. More and more blackbirds have also become resident birds and frequent visitors at our bird tables in winter. Already in January, those who are resident birds can be heard through their trying "shadow song". Early in the spring they are followed by the returnees from the continent. The area must be occupied. First on site are males with song, now loud, intense and sure-toned, preferably from high positions, then the females follow; time for mating and breeding with up to three litters per year. Through author Clas Thor and photographer Torbjörn Arvidson, you get to follow the blackbird for a calendar year, getting to know the bird's life, habits and life cycle. They also take you to encounters with the blackbird in literature, folklore and myth, in music and paintings. There will be meetings at home in Sweden, in Germany, France, England and in Ireland, all accompanied by the bird whose song, regardless of nationality, comes from its many-yellow beak.
